YALLANG GEOG: BRIEF BACKGROUND
Yallang geog is remotest geog of Trashiyangtse
which is situated to the extreme south east of the Dzongkhag. The geog shares
the international border with the state of Araunachal Pradesh, India from the
north-east and bordered by Bartsham & Sakten geog of Trashigang Dzongkhag
from the south, Khamdang in the North West and Ramjar geog in the west.
The geog has a size of 90.3 square kilometers with a total population of 3280 as per the existing record
maintained by the geog administration. The geog comprises of five Tshokhas with
83 small villages. The geog has 445
households in total. Unlike other geogs of Trashiyangtse, Yallang geog is
farthest and it’s not accessible to motor road connectivity. It’s about six
hours walk from the nearest road point. With the new government policy of
connecting every geog with road network, Yallang geog is also approved with 23 km farm road from Doksum to Thragom,
geog centre which is under construction. The geog has electricity coverage
Yallang geog has been identified by the
Dzongkhag as the most vulnerable and under privileged community. The topography
of the geog does not provide good ground for the cultivation of paddy because
of the vertical gradient of the soil structure. Till date, the geog has
approximately 402.962 acres
of wet land. The altitude of the area ranges from 1360 meter above sea level to 2190
m above sea level. Oranges, potatoes and garlic are the main cash crops which
fetch income for the individual household.
From 1987.71acres of dry land around
350.60acres
of dry land is devoted for cultivation and from402.962 acres
of land around 320 acres are used for cultivation. The people grow various
crops amongst which maize and paddy is the main staple food crop.
There is one lower secondary school with three primary
schools with 28
teachers under Yallang geog which are located at different sites owing to the
scatter pattern of settlement found in the geog. Apart from schools, there are two NFE (Non
Formal Education) centers for adult education with a present enrollment of 26 people pursuing their non formal
education.
The geog too has one RNR centre with 5
staffs rendering their services to the people. The geog has one Basic Health Unit
(BHU GR-II) and four Out Reach Clinic (ORC) with 2 health workers serving the
community.
