major maintenance of irrigation channel - Khamdang Gewog, Trashiyangtse

Buyang irrigation channel in Khamdang Gewog was constructed in the year 1976. It benefits almost all the public of the gewog, serving more than 5,000 people. No major maintenance except minor was done on yearly basis. The channel has become old and this posed problems to the public in the Gewog. Since the channel benefits almost all, the Gewog administration and the public felt the need for major renovation. The govt. of India agreed to fund the project which cost Nu. 17 million.

The work was contracted by the Centre (Ministry of Agriculture). It was supposed to completed within ten months. The work has begun. It is more than two years now. Yet the work is underway. The contractor said work was delayed because of the monsoons. This has further aggravated the problem of the public. They haven't cultivated their land for more than three years now.

For the benefit of the public in general, the Gewog and Dzongkhag administration is doing our best pressing the contractor to finish the work sooner but to no avail. The matter was reported to the MoA and we are waiting for action to speed up the completion of the work.

So the Gewog Administration is hopeful, the concerned stakeholders could speed up the work so that the poor public would have access to irrigation water soon so that they can irrigate their land.
